Aryn Morell makes his wines in Walla Walla, and his client list includes Cakebread as well as Woodinville’s Matthews and Tenor. He also works closely with Lawrence Vineyards, the estate site for Gärd Vintners, and he shines by going 100 percent Syrah from a combination of Lawrence and nearby Stillwater Creek vineyards. Morell’s barrel program of 16 months in 100 percent new French oak allows for aromas of black cherry, tayberry, coffee, toffee and rose hips. On the palate, it reveals rich flavors of black currant jam, Marionberry and crushed blueberry, framed by bittersweet chocolate tannins and pleasing acidity — a delicious combination that creates length. These wines are available along the West Coast as well as Nevada, the Carolinas, New York, New Jersey, Georgia, Ontario, British Columbia and the Matthews tasting room in Woodinville.
