Durant Vineyards 2014 Southview Pinot Gris, Dundee Hills, $18
Dundee Hills vintner Don Lange helped put Pinot Gris on the map in the Willamette Valley, and now his son, Jesse, has taken the wine program to another level. The friendship of both with Ken Durant and his son, Paul, led to this collaborative winemaker/grower effort from the Durant family’s Red Ridge Farms. The Southview block at Durant Vineyards, established in 1973 with half of its 120 acres subsequently planted to grape vines, allows for Jesse to create aromas of sliced peach, Red Delicious apple and bosc pear with tropical hints of Piña Colada and lemon zest. The approach to the palate casts the spotlight on ripe orchard fruit of white peach and pear, backed by jicama. There’s a kiss of sweetness, which is handled by spritzy acidity, making it ideal company for the patio.
