It’s remarkable that a winery of Marc Roland’s size and youth gains access to Washington state’s oldest site for this Rhône grape, and the Sauer famliy’s fruit has elevated the profile of this young winery in Longview. His latest release of Syrah opens with aromas of huckleberry and blackberry milkshake, backed by vanilla, toast and moist earth. The pour brings rich flavors of Hostess Blackberry pie and dried blueberry, which are focused around sandy tannins that bring good grip to the finish of elderberry. Look for this to develop into a wine as remarkable as Roland’s 2011 version.
