Welcome Road Winery 2012 Roadtrip Red, Washington, $24
Washington State University product Leigh McMillan and Kristen Dorrity focus their nascent program on some of the state’s top vineyards such as Dineen, Milbrandt and Sagemoor, and they come together from this brightly textured blend of Cabernet Franc (35%), Malbec (35%), Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) and Merlot. The use of predominantly older French oak allows for vibrant tones of cranberry, Montmorency cherry and lingonberry with notes of cinnamon, cumin and cedar within a food-friendly structure focused on acidity rather than tannin. Next month, Welcome Road Winery celebrates its one-year anniversary of the tasting room it shares with Sol Stone at the Woodinville Warehouse District. This wine has shined in two of the West Coast’s largest judgings with silver medals at the 2015 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and 2015 Great Northwest Wine Competition. Their winery on Stevens Street in West Seattle allows the team to offer free delivery in the greater Seattle area.
