Scott DeSeelhorst takes wines made from estate grapes off one of Idaho’s largest vineyards and sells them at his tasting room in downtown Boise — just a short walk from the state Capitol. There’s great optimism in the Snake River Valley for Rhone varieties, and this complex blend of Grenache (55%), Syrah (35%) and Mourvèdre is one reason why, although the cool vintage led to a Nov. 4 harvest of the Grenache. Aromas of dark toast mix generously with blackberry, black cherry and blueberry, backed by timothy hay and moist earth. There’s fresh plum leading the bold flavors, which also pick up red currant and blueberry, packaging them within a medium structure of narrowly focused tannins. A luscious midpalate leads to enjoyable length.
