The Pines 1852 2012 The Pines Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel, Columbia Valley, $40
Lonnie Wright established himself as one of the Pacific Northwest’s top vineyard managers three decades ago, which explains how he managed to restore these vines, planted more than a century ago near The Dalles, Ore. They were virtually forgotten for more than 20 years before he was introduced to them in 1982, and uber-talent Peter Rosback began turning them into award-winning wines in 2001. This release, 40 years after its discovery, dazzles with tones of dark raspberry, strawberry fruit leather and white pepper, making for a deep, rich and spicy drink. This fall, it earned a silver medal at the 2014 Columbia Gorge Wine Competition.
