Matthews Winery 2012 Claret, Columbia Valley, $40
One of Woodinville’s most recognizable bottlings takes a slightly different turn with a blend of Bordeaux varieties that’s based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, but now includes Syrah. Stillwater Creek and Sagemoor Farms fruit remain a constant in Aryn Morell’s vineyard program for the Claret, which was joined by Red Mountain sites Hedges and Blue Mountain. The wood program also remained steady with 40% new French oak, and that merely accents the wine. A classic nose black currant, black cherry and plum includes menthol, moist earth and coffee. Bold and juicy flavors of black currant and Bing cherry strike balance with blueberry skin and juice, leading to a rich finish.
