Canoe Ridge Vineyard 2013 The Expedition Chardonnay, Horse Heaven Hills, $15

Canoe Ridge Vineyard-2013-The Expedition Chardonnay BottleBest Buy! While the Horse Heaven Hills are well-known for producing many of Washington’s most-acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon, this region also sets the table for stunning white wines, including this bargain Chardonnay. It’s a blend of Canoe Ridge Vineyard and The Benches, both of which are estate sites for CRV’s parent company — Precept Wine. Bill Murray’s program includes 40% barrel aging, with just 15% of that new wood, and sitting in the glass its slight greenish tint hints at Grüner Veltliner. It’s unmistakably Chardonnay  with aromas of light toast and hazelnut skins, joined by dusty lemon, melon, Golden Delicious apple and a pad of butterscotch. The palate offers complexity with an entry of Asian pear followed by a midpalate of vanilla and lemon custard, capped by pineapple acidity for a deliciously tropical finish.
