Cadaretta 2012 Windthrow Red Wine, Columbia Valley, $50
The Middleton family began creating GSM blends with the 2007 vintage, and this remarkably expressive six-barrel lot of Syrah (56%), Grenache (25%) and Mourvèdre ranks among the best in the region. It’s built on the shoulders of Syrah from vaunted StoneTree Vineyard, with the Grenache coming off Monette’s Vineyard in The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater and rounded out by Alder Ridge Mourvèdre. Blackberry, Bing cherry and toasted cherry wood aromas include a whiff of leather, chalkboard dust and black pepper. Those notes are confirmed on the palate, which offers a round mouth feel with blackberry, bittersweet chocolate and fine-grained tannins. Marionberry acidity keeps pace and stretches out the finish.
