Canoe Ridge Vineyard 2013 The Expedition Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills, $15
Best Buy! These days, Walla Walla Valley winemaker Bill Murray has more than just Canoe Ridge Vineyard to work with for this Precept brand as the Seattle-based company recently took control of more vines at The Benches, a longtime estate planting for Long Shadows Vintners. That fruit plays a major role in this consumer-priced Cab, and it’s presented in an Old World style with diminished barrel influence and aromas of red currant, Herbes de Provence and light vanilla. The background of blackberry in the nose hints at the role of Syrah (7%), and that brambleberry tone leads the flavors. Bing cherry and red currant add to the lighter-structured Cab as acidity stands up early, followed by dusty tannins that blossom in the finish.
