Hat Ranch Winery 2014 Estate Dry Moscato, Snake River Valley, $18
By Great Northwest Wine on August 11, 2015
Air Force veterans Tim and Dr. Helen Harless moved from Texas to Idaho’s Sunnyslope Wine District in 2011 and a couple years later began putting down vineyard roots. This fascinating work with Muscat Ottonel is their first estate wine and shows dexterous winemaking skill by preserving the beautiful tropical notes while presenting it bone dry. Gorgeous rosewater, lychee and Texas pink grapefruit aromas and flavors linger from start to its lemony finish. There’s a huge amount of acidity and the structure shows elegance without any bitterness. It’s a stunning and serious example of Muscat.

I was certified as a wine journeyman by taking the 4 day Napa Valley Wine Appreciation Course hosted by James Beard in 1974 with Joel Peterson before we started Ravenswood together. I chaired the Idaho Wine Competition judging team from 2004-2009. Thank you for your consideration! I would be happy to send you a photo of the medal.
