Seven Hills Winery 2013 McClellan Estate Vineyard Cabernet Franc, Walla Walla Valley, $35
Last year, grower/winemaker Casey McClellan finally gave into supporters whom for years have been pleading for a straight Cabernet Franc. He’s been using it to help shape the prized Pentad at his downtown Walla Walla winery, but this year he made more Francophiles giddy by tripling the bottling run from the certified-sustainable blocks of this family vineyard established in 2003. It presents seductive aromas of barrel spice, dark chocolate, black raspberry and cordial cherry while steering away from herbaceousness. The pour brings a rich and elegant entry of black cherry and black currant with a pleasing grip of tannins and underlying dried herbs.
