Reininger Winery 2012 Seven Hills Vineyard Carménère, Walla Walla Valley, $51
The Reininger and Tucker families launched their brand in 1997, and they quickly embraced heralded Seven Hills Vineyard — one of the Northwest’s most innovative and environmentally responsible. That connection allows Chuck Reininger to offer one of the Pacific Northwest’s largest and most expressive examples of this fascinating Bordeaux variety that once was feared lost forever in the wake of phylloxera. Here’s a bold, age-worthy offering that opens with a nose of dark chocolate and espresso that leads to blackberry reduction sauce, plum, pomegranate and fresh mint. Racy flavors of black plums and black cherry are backed by pie cherry filling, mouth-filling tannins and a shake of black pepper.
