Flying Trout Wines 2012 Windrow Vineyard Mary’s Block Malbec, Walla Walla Valley, $45
Windrow Vineyard, established in 1981, is the Walla Walla Valley’s oldest commercial vineyard and its fruit from west of Milton-Freewater, Ore., is one of the reasons Ashley Trout remains committed to making Malbec in the Pacific Northwest. (She’s worked Malbec harvest in Argentina for years, too.) There’s a dark blue and purple fruit profile from start to finish within this bottling, hinting at an assortment of Marionberry, blueberry and pomegranate both in the aromas and flavors. Its structure leans toward the juicy side rather than tannic as it finishes with chocolate, toasted filberts and black currant. Her wines are available at the tasting room shared with Tero Estates in the Marcus Whitman Hotel lobby.
