Côtes de Ciel 2012 Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Mountain, $50
After 37 years of nurturing vines and growing grapes for others on Red Mountain, the Holmes family began holding back some of its fruit starting in 2012 and producing their own wines. This Cabernet Sauvignon is product of the debut vintage for Côtes de Ciel, and the clone 8 fruit — aged in 100% new French oak for 22 months — shows the excellence and elegance that have led to decades of high scores for others. Aromas of sweet plums, raspberry reduction sauce and roasted coffee include accents of chocolate, ginger and anise. The pour brings a smooth entry of black currant, more plums and chocolate-covered pomegranate as its structure of focused tannins and solid acidity leads to pleasing length. Holmes Family Winery ships in-state as well as to Colorado, Minnesota, Oregon, Idaho, Florida and Washington D.C.
