Tempus Cellars 2011 Sagemoor Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley $32
Sagemoor Vineyard, the first large-scale planting to feed the growing Washington state wine industry, was first established in 1972. Since launching Tempus Cellars, University of Washington grad Joe Forest gradually has been increasing the influence of Sagemoor’s old block Cab in his offerings, but this marks his inaugural vineyard-designate Cabernet Sauvignon from Sagemoor — nearly 40 years after these vines were first sunk into the ground. The nose of black cherry, dark chocolate, black olive and gravel dust leads to bold and focused flavors of dark cherry, chocolate and cola. Refined tannins create an attractive finish, and this received a silver medal at the 2015 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition, an annual scholarship fundraiser for Walla Walla Community College.
