Three Rivers Winery 2012 Malbec-Merlot, Columbia Valley, $29
By Great Northwest Wine on September 11, 2015
One of Washington’s top sites for Malbec — Gamache Vineyard along the White Bluffs near the Columbia River upstream from Pasco — plays a significant role in this 50/50 blend with Merlot from nearby Bacchus Vineyard and Seven Hills Vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley. Dusty oak creates a dense aromatic profile of chocolate, vanilla and Graham cracker with black currant, blackberry and ground coffee. Its smooth entry leads to a tremendous mouth feel of those same black fruits as bittersweet chocolate, juicy acidity and tannin akin to espresso grounds make for a long, bold and refined finish.
