Cana’s Feast Winery 2012 Mountain Cuvée, Columbia Valley, $55
Carlton, Ore., winemaker Patrick Taylor furthers his proud relationship with two historic Red Mountain growers — Jim Holmes of Ciel du Cheval and Larry Pearson of Tapteil Vineyard — in conjunction with this Meritage-style red. The Cabernet Franc (40%) and Petit Verdot (10%) came off Ciel du Cheval, established in the late 1970s. Pearson began planting in 1985, and his Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) and Merlot (20%) help drive this blend. The 18 months in 50% new French oak barrels make from aromas of black currant, blackberry and plum with cocoa powder and dark toast. Inside, it’s a bold presentation of blackberry cobbler and blueberry, backed by rich tannins and pomegranate acidity. Enjoy now with well-marbled meats, but there will be further rewards in half a decade.
