Montana native Richard Funk releases this expression of Malbec under his “Classic” tier, and this product of a cool vintage is focused on Summit View Vineyard — one of the valley’s higher elevation sites that’s part of the SeVein project and adjacent to renowned Seven Hills Vineyard. His use of 40 percent new French oak barrels for 17 months creates a mood of dark chocolate, vanilla, black cherry, plum and espresso. The structure is smooth and graceful with mild tannins that lead to a juicy finish of blueberries, chocolate and black pepper. This earned a silver medal at the 2015 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition, an annual judging that funds scholarships for students at Walla Walla Community College’s Center for Enology & Viticulture.
