Sawtooth Winery 2012 Classic Fly Series Chardonnay, Snake River Valley, $25

Sawtooth Winery-2012-Classic Fly Series ChardonnayBoise native Meredith Smith and Napa product Bill Murray collaborated on this extremely expressive and rich Chardonnay from four blocks off the historic Sawtooth estate, a 70-acre vineyard at 2,700 feet of elevation in Idaho between Lake Lowell and the Snake River. Aromas of lemon, Asian pear, Spanish almonds, banana and star anise transition to a pleasing blend of lemon, butterscotch and brioche. The rich midpalate picks up Granny Smith apple tartness that leads to a finish of toast — another sign of the 18 months in 50% new American oak — and another rub of star anise.
