Saviah Cellars 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, Walla Walla Valley $30
Three Oregon vineyards — Anna Marie, McClellan Estate and Summit View — within a quick drive of Richard Funk’s award-winning winery just north of the stateline come together for the Cabernet Sauvignon piece of Saviah Cellars’ Classic Collection. The 17-month barrel program of 40 percent new French oak yields aromas of dark plum, black currant, pomegranate and black licorice. Those dark fruit notes make for a delicious, round and juicy drink with moderate tannins that carry into a long finish of chocolate-covered blueberries. This earned a silver medal at the 2015 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition, an annual judging that funds scholarships for students at Walla Walla Community College’s Center for Enology & Viticulture.
