Otis Kenyon Wine 2012 Malbec, Washington, $40
Phinny Hill Vineyard near famed Champoux Vineyard factored into Dave Stephenson’s early and worthy efforts with Malbec for Seattle law firm executive Steven Otis Kenyon, and that Horse Heaven Hills site is back in the mix with Pepper Bridge Vineyard for a beautifully balanced expression of this red grape from Bordeaux. Aromas of black cherry, black currant, mocha and sweet oak spices continue into the drink that offers mild tannins and pomegranate acidity. A touch of blueberry makes for a great finish. This earned a gold medal at the 2015 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition, an annual judging that funds scholarships for students at Walla Walla Community College’s Center for Enology & Viticulture.
