Mercer Estates 2012 Reserve Cavalie Red Wine, Horse Heaven Hills, $42
By Great Northwest Wine on October 9, 2015
Washington State University grad Jessica Munnell’s first crush with the historic Mercer family continues to yield impressive results across the spectrum, including this Meritage-style approach from the stellar 2012 vintage. Her debut assemblage of Merlot (52%), Cabernet Sauvignon (27%) Malbec (17%) and Petit Verdot from Big Tee Pee Vineyard and Zephyr Ridge yields intense tones of fresh-roasted coffee and rich cherry notes, backed by a plummy structure that builds with blueberry skin tannins, raspberry juice and chocolate-covered pomegranate. It’s a big wine built to last, yet it’s already showing beautifully.
Rating: Outstanding!
Production: 90 cases
Alcohol: 14.7%
