Union Wine Co. 2013 Kings Ridge Riesling, Willamette Valley, $14
Best Buy! It’s no surprise that Ryan Harms excels with Riesling considering he was raised in New York’s Finger Lakes and works with Chehalem Mountain Vineyard, home to one of Oregon’s oldest spots for Riesling — planted in 1968 by pioneer Dick Erath. The Tualatin winemaker creates it with a bit of an Old World flavor, opening with aromas of baked apple, candy corn and lemon peel with a veil of gravel dust. The drink is sleek and zesty, leading with Granny Smith apple and gooseberry, backed by slate, lime juice and starfruit.
