Cavatappi Winery 2012 San Pietro Tuscan Style Red Wine, Columbia Valley, $23
Peter Dow opened now-famous Café Juanita in 1977 in Kirkland, Wash., and seven years later he founded the restaurant as a winery. Nearly 30 years after that, Dow entered a marketing partnership with Precept Wine, and they worked on this blend of Sangiovese (38%), Merlot (31%) and Cabernet Sauvignon from Alder Ridge, Boushey, Hedges and EFESTĒ’s Taylor Mag. The name is a rather creative and clever job of blending, too. Aromas of plum and black currant include boysenberry, blackstrap molasses and minerality. Inside, it’s rich with overtones of pomegranate and Western serviceberry backed by dark chocolate. Sturdy frontal tannins and pleasing juiciness on the finish make for rewarding length.
