Ryan Patrick Vineyards 2013 Redhead Red, Columbia Valley, $10
Washington State University grad Jeremy Santo lights the fuse to a cherry bomb with this youthful blend that’s dominated by Merlot (84%) and backed by Malbec (13%) and Syrah. It starts with cherries and ends with cherries, both in the nose and the flavors, but in between there are aromatic hints of blueberry, holiday spices and candela tobacco. Inside, the explosion of candied cherries, cranberry juice and blueberry taffy comes with a smooth mouth feel. Pomegranate jam in the background adds to the acidity, lending the wine to pairing with a pork loin or Christmas turkey.
