Blasted Church Vineyard 2013 Merlot, Okanagan Valley, $23
One of Canada’s most recognizable brands continues to deliver with this Merlot from its Storytelling Series by winemaker Mark Wendenburg, formerly of Sumac Ridge. Vines surrounding the Corkscrew Trail winery, which overlooks Skaha Lake, blend with Southern Okanagan Valley fruit to build aromas of dark plum, black currant and sweet earth, backed by five spice powder and portobello mushroom. On the pour, it’s filled with President plum and black currant juice as plum skin tannins lead to a finish of pomegranate with milk chocolate. Suggested pairings include pâté, charcuterie, pork or veal roasts and hamburgers. This received a gold medal at the 2015 British Columbia Wine Awards.
