Maryhill Winery 2014 Chardonnay, Columbia Valley, $14
Best Buy! In recent years, almost every wine Maryhill winemaker Richard Batchelor creates seems to turn into a precious commodity — regardless of its price. His latest Chardonnay from Milbrandt Vineyards (74%) and Tudor Hills Vineyards (26%) in the Yakima Valley, influence by 20% new French oak, led to a gold medal at the 2015 Great Northwest Invitational Wine Competition. A hint of caramel, plus pineapple and apple combine in its nose, then in the mouth are augmented by lime, tart apple and a tiny bit of dainty Asian pear at its edges. On this date in 1926, Queen Marie of Romania traveled to Goldendale and dedicated the Maryhill Museum of Art, just a short ATV drive away from Craig and Vicki Leuthold’s showpiece winery.
