Historic Mosel Riesling producer Ernst Loosen and Bob Bertheau take a sweet and luxurious approach with this high-end tier of Eroica, a brand named for Beethoven’s Third Symphony. While the famed original-style Eroica checks in at 1.5% residual sugar, this is akin to a late harvest Riesling at 6.6% RS. That sweetness from a hot vintage is hinted at the nose of canned pineapple, honeydew melon, Bartlett pear and Wrigley’s Spearmint Gum, joined by baking spices and a whiff of petrol. Between the gums, it offers fruit cocktail flavors with guava and center-cut pineapple. Suggested pairings include Asian dishes, Indian curries, crab and scallops.
