Evolve Cellars 2013 Cabernet Merlot, Okanagan Valley, $19
Canadian wine industry icon Harry McWatters and his daughter, Christa-Lee Bond, recently launched this consumer-priced tier as part of their Encore Vineyards project, which includes the under-construction TIME Estate Winery on the Black Sage Bench. It’s a smooth blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (25%) and Cabernet Franc that’s redolent with dense tones of mocha, toast and nutmeg with Bing cherry. and black currant. Delicious balance leads to a finish of chocolate-covered orange peel. Suggested pairings range from a cheese plate to roasted duck, beef or an artisan pizza. Each bottling by Evolve comes under an alternative closure and below $20 Canadian, but price was not an object at the 2015 British Columbia Wine Awards competition, where it earned a gold medal.
