Chateau Ste. Michelle 2014 Cold Creek Vineyard Riesling, Columbia Valley, $16
Walter Clore bird-dogged this historic site for Ste. Michelle Wine Estates four decades ago, and its versatility might be undersurpassed. Indeed, one of Washington state’s top sites for Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay also produces world-class Riesling, earning our top rating for the second straight year. Clean and stylish aromas of Asian pear, gooseberry, lime and baking spice are joined by a bit of diesel. There’s a beautifully bright entry of fresh white peach followed by mouthwatering Key Lime pie and finished with a slice of gooseberry pie. While the residual sugar finished at 1.6%, the pH of 2.9 and total acidity of 6.7% strikes an accord that’s stunning. Bob Bertheau and David Rosenthal were asked to make less than half as much as he did in 2013. Enjoy with crab, chicken, curries and dishes influenced by chai spices such as allspice, black pepper, cloves and nutmeg.
Rating: Outstanding!
Production: 4,564 cases
