Horan Estates Winery 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, $24

horan-estates-winery-cabernet-sauvignon-nv-labelFifteen years ago, Doug McDougall made an investment into the organic apple business  in Washington’s Frenchman Hills and also took a chance on 2 acres of Syrah. Within five years, he expanded his grape plantings to 8 acres, named it Westhill Vineyard, and created a winery in the Wenatchee Valley town of Cashmere devoted to estate grapes in 2006. This vintage served as the final for McDougall, who has since turned over the vines, wine program and tasting room to his cousin, Beth Dobbs. McDougall’s last expression of Cabernet Sauvignon offers a theme of caramel, fig, pomegranate and leaf tobacco, backed by chocolate and mouth-filling blackberry seed tannins.
