As famous as Abacela has become for Iberian Peninsula varieties such as Tempranillo and Albariño, their work with Syrah also has been groundbreaking in Southern Oregon. The Cox Rock Vineyard below the Joneses’ Vine & Wine Center includes the Jasper Block, which overlooks the nearby school and ranks as one of the cooler sites among the 23 parcels across Fault Line Vineyards. Its Syrah typicity shows up early in the nose of blackberry and blueberry mixed with smoky charcuterie, molasses, roasted coffee and earthiness. Inside, there’s enjoyable ruggedness to the structure of blackberry and black currant, backed by dusty blueberry skin tannins and pomegranate acidity. Reach for this when grilling beef ribs or setting a table for Lamb Ragout with Olives, a recipe offered by former Canlis chef Jason Franey.
