Lost West Winery 2013 Barbera, Washington, $25
Snake River Valley winemaker Martin Fujishin reaches beyond his native Idaho and into a Washington vineyard he’s not allowed to name for this stunning example of the Italian grape that gaining a following in the Pacific Northwest. It’s fruit-forward nose of plum juice, blueberry and plump dark cherry includes hints of cola and caramel. On the pour, it gushes with dark purple tones of juicy Marionberry and elderberry that gain support from cranberry sauce, leading to baking spices and beautifully satiny finish of blueberry jam. It’s a crowd pleaser that packs plenty of food-friendly acidity. These wines can be purchased at the shared Lost West Winery/Fujishin Family Cellars tasting room in the Sunnyslope Wine District and via the winery website.
