Best Buy! In a short period of time, Victor Palencia has emerged as one of Washington state’s premier winemakers, and few can match his skill with white wines. He launched his own winery in 2013 in Walla Walla — where he went to winemaking school — and the stream of stellar wines is constant. His go-to site for his Pinot Gris is Frenchman Hills Vineyard near the Royal Slope, and he continues to shine. The bright nose offers aromas of kiwi fruit, ripe pear, Gala apple and orange. That theme continues onto the palate, which offers refreshing acidity. Notes of apricot, watermelon and minerality make for a great mouth feel and fantastic finish. Enjoy it on its own or alongside scallops, grilled fish with mango salsa or salads. It earned a gold medal at the 2015 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition, and it’s available in the Puget Sound at Capri Cellars in Issaquah and Second Street Wine Shop in Langley and The Wine Shop in Marysville, throughout the Tri-Cities at Mid Columbia Wine & Spirits and Yoke’s Fresh Markets, in the Yakima Valley at Bonnie’s Vine & Gift and Rancho Alegre in Prosser, and in Walla Walla at not only his winery but his downtown wine bar.
