Waterbrook Winery 2014 Merlot, Columbia Valley, $14
By Great Northwest Wine on December 19, 2015
Best Buy! Four sites provided all the fruit for this 100% Merlot, including Precept’s new Skyfall Vineyard, planted at the northern base of the Horse Heaven Hills. Its oak profile is signaled with hints of caramel corn and chocolate-covered blueberry with sarsaparilla, plums, strawberry and red cherry. Tones of those darker fruit spill out on the palate, which offers bold tannins, racy acidity and delicious length. They’ve more than doubled production of this since the 2012 vintage, so it should be easy enough to find and enjoy with fare such as steak topped with mushrooms, pork chops rubbed with rosemary or tomato-influenced pasta dishes.
