Scott Henry III established his vineyard in 1972 near Sutherlin, Ore., with three grape varieties — Pinot Noir among them. There’s rarely an issue with ripening any grape in this portion of Southern Oregon, and that shows here, starting with aromas of dark cherry and blueberry joined by lilac, rose petal, cedar and baking spices. It’s even darker on the palate, with fruity flavors of black cherry, dried strawberry and blackberry. Sandy tannins and spritzy acidity give way to a finish of toffee and ripe watermelon. The Henrys suggest pairing this youthful Pinot Noir with beef, duck, lamb or salmon.
