A pair of higher-elevation sites in the upper Yakima Valley come together as Syrah from Sugarloaf Vineyard (72%) is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon (28%) from sister parcel Elephant Mountain as well as Dineen Vinyard. The Balsleys program of 42% new French oak with medium-plus toast allows the nose to lead with vanilla and roasted coffee as red plums, rhubarb and white pepper join in the aromas. Red cherry and plum flavors lead into mild tannins, pleasing elderberry and sweet herbs. It’s an easy-going red, which is now expected in Washington when the blend features Syrah.
