Mercer Estates 2014 Zephyr Ridge Vineyard Reserve Chardonnay, Horse Heaven Hills, $30
The Horse Heaven Hills is one of the most expansive growing regions in Washington state, but it’s a closely knit community, and the relationship between the Mercer and Watts family continues with this reserve bottling — the third vintage by Jessica Munnell. Her tradition is a 50/50 program of new and neutral Burgundy barrels has created aromas of dusty white peach, brioche, Angel Food cake, a bit of lemon and light butterscotch. That theme carries onto the palate, which offers a nice bit of oak and balanced creaminess with lingering lemon, lime and dried pineapple. Its finish of lemon pith and Golden Delicious apple make this an easy drinker and pleasing companion with lobster tail and dipping butter.
