77. Armstrong Family Winery 2012 Celebration Series Cabernet Franc, Columbia Valley $28

armstrong-family-winery-celebration-series-cabernet-franc-2012-bottleWoodinville winemaker Tim Armstrong continues to show his flair using small lots of Bordeaux varieties grown in the Columbia Valley with this richly textured Cabernet Franc off Stillwater Creek Vineyard in the Frenchman Hills near Othello, Wash. The profile is one of black cherry and black currant with sweet oak, cola nut, bay rum and lilac. There are pleasing and underlying notes of dried herbs and black olive, backed by great acidity and moderate tannins that make this a Cab Franc for lovers of Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine, which the Armstrongs pair with hearty stews, merited a gold medal at the 2015 Seattle Wine and Food Experience Wine Competition. It marked the second straight year he’s engineered a gold medal at that competition for one of his reds.
