38. Barnard Griffin 2014 Roussanne, Columbia Valley, $20
Roussanne, one of the four white varieties allowed to be grown in the Rhône Valley’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape, would seem to thrive at the eastern end of Washington state’s Columbia Gorge, where the Gunkel family picked this grape Oct. 17 for Rob Griffin. The dean of Washington winemakers produces this under a cool fermentation in stainless steel, which captures clean and enchanting aromas of sweet lemon, Golden Delicious apple, lime and baking spice. On the palate, flavors of Gala apple and gingersnap cookie are framed by tremendous mouth feel that offers exciting acidity and great length as a slice of artichoke heart leads to a lemony sheen in the finish. This serves as a stunning alternative to Chardonnay, and Griffin suggests enjoying it as a sipper or pairing with duck breast, braised rabbit, poultry dishes and rich cheeses.
