20. Walla Walla Vintners 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, Walla Walla Valley, $38
Among the best wines tasted in 2015 was this superb Cab from one of the oldest and most respected producers in Washington’s Walla Walla Valley. It is a blend of six vineyards, led by the estate planting in Upper Mill Creek east of town. The resulting wine blends Cabernet Sauvignon (76%), Merlot (15%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Petit Verdot. In the hands of winemaker William vonMetzger, it is an elegant yet powerful wine. Aromas of black olive, oak spice, black cherry and cocoa powder give way to flavors of blackberry, tobacco leaf, Baker’s chocolate and pomegranate. A rich midpalate is backed by firm yet pliable tannins that ultimately give way to a luscious and memorable finish.
