18. Jones of Washington 2014 Sauvignon Blanc, Ancient Lakes of Columbia Valley, $15
Best Buy! An argument can be made for referring to Victor Palencia as the top producer of Sauvignon Blanc in the Pacific Northwest. This wine, which he made on the Wahluke Slope for the Jones family from their Lozier Vineyard, earned best of show at the 2015 North Central Washington Wine Awards. Palencia’s own brand was voted as the best white wine at the 2015 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition and came within a whisker being selected the best white wine of this month’s third annual Great Northwest Invitational Wine Competition. And recently, this Sauv Blanc for the Joneses also was evaluated under blind condition by the Great Northwest Wine tasting panel. There’s the classic nose of gooseberry, lemongrass, spearmint and faint hint of tomcat. Inside, its scintillating acidity provides delicious and remarkably long and bone-dry flavors of Granny Smith apple, gooseberry pie and clementine.
