Silvan Ridge 2013 Tempranillo, Rogue Valley, $26
Argentine winemaker Juan Pablo Valot, who chairs the research committee for the Oregon Wine Board, follows up nicely on his first vintage of Tempranillo for Silvan Ridge owner Elizabeth Chambers. He sources the grapes for this Spanish variety in one of the Pacific Northwest’s warmest regions, and it comes with youthful aromas of dark chocolate, black currant, black cherry and sweet herbs that blossom with decanting. The rich entry to the palate brings dark cherry and brambleberry flavors. There’s good tension to the structure with pomegranate seed tannin and pie cherry acidity, making for a rewarding food-friendly finish. These vines are available at the tasting room and in distribution through Young’s Market Co.
