Grantwood Winery 2013 Tempranillo, Walla Walla Valley, $18
Joe Grant and Doris Wood continue to produce some of the best reds in Walla Walla, regardless price. And they neither raise their prices nor their production. In fact, their 2012 Tempranillo sold for $19. They remain true to Les Collines Vineyard and true to this robust Spanish red, which has been likened to the Iberian Peninsula’s example of Cabernet Sauvignon. The dark-toned nose brings hints of black cherry, blackberry, black tea, licorice and black olive. Next comes a rough-hewn entry of bold black fruit with cherry, chocolate and Earl Grey tea, yet the tannins smooth out for a pleasing long finish. This merited a gold medal at the 2015 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition, an annual judging that funds scholarships for students at Walla Walla Community College’s Center for Enology & Viticulture.
