Woodward Canyon Winery 2013 Merlot, Columbia Valley, $44
By Great Northwest Wine on January 27, 2016
Longtime winemaker Kevin Mott relies on venerable Weinbau Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope for the foundation of this Merlot, with Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard contributing 15 percent of the final assemblage. (The 2012 vintage led to a 50/50 split). As much buzz as Cabernet Sauvignon generates for Woodward Canyon, this Merlot is a classic beauty, redolent of black cherry, cola, toast and mocha with delicious baking spice accents. Sweet tannins and a good layering of acidity combine for a balanced, cellar-worthy structure.
