Red Lily Vineyards 2012 Tempranillo, Rogue Valley, $35
Jacksonville, Ore., winemaker Rachael Martin continues to prove to be a talent, particularly with Tempranillo. Her 2007 Reserve Temp earned a gold medal at the 2014 Great Northwest Invitational, and her latest release from clone 1 and the Duero clone — harvested at 25 Brix — is remarkably showy after 22 months in French oak. The plummy nose in dense with blackberry and dried blueberry notes, toasted French bread crust, white pepper and lavender. There’s deliciously juiciness to the palate with dark ripe black currant and Bing cherry. Clove spice and black licorice filter through the structure of medium tannins and pomegranate acidity. This wine earned a double gold at the 2016 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
