Reustle Prayer Rock Vineyards 2013 Winemaker’s Reserve Grüner Veltliner, Umpqua Valley, $29
By Eric Degerman on January 30, 2016
Stephen Reustle’s passion for the signature white grape of Austria began with a motorcycle trip through the Alps, and this vintage marked the 10th anniversary of establishing the variety on a commercial scale in Southern Oregon. It now accounts for 5 of his 40 planted acres, and he creates several expressions of Grüner. There’s a lean minerality to the nose with Granny Smith apple, starfruit, lime zest and seashells. On the palate, it’s clean and bright with more green apple and lime candy flavors. Its flash of residual sugar to round the edges also lends itself to Thai food and a plate of cheese and fresh vegetables.
