Abacela 2013 Barrel Select Malbec, Umpqua Valley, $27
Longtime Oregon winemaker Andrew Wenzl made four picks across the Jones family’s Fault Line Vineyards three weeks apart in preparation for this selection from two clones established on blocks amounting to 7 acres. There’s significant age to these vines, some dating to the original Abacela planting in 1995. The nose of dusty black currant, President plum, dark toast, Jolly Rancher Grape candy, lavender and lilac leads to a rich and brawny delivery of elderberry and pomegranate with a finish of Red Vines licorice. It’s built for the long haul, yet enjoy with Steak au Poivre along the way.

I love Malbecs and have been looking for a list for a list of NW candidates for our wine club tasting. I wish there was a way to print your fantastic articles. If there is and I just overlooked it, please let me know.
