L. Donovan Wines 2011 Long Walk Vineyard GSM, Rogue Valley, $22
As conductor at her Pallet Wine Co., Linda Donovan puts her University of California-Davis degree to work on tens of thousands of cases for her 20 clients. She carves out a bit of time for her eponymous 1,000-case project. This blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre hails from one of her go-to sites for red Rhône varieties in the hills surrounding Ashland — a vineyard she planted in 2000 soon upon her arrival to Southern Oregon. Aromas of toasty oak, strawberry, raspberry and poached plum include hints of caramel and vanilla. Plump berry flavors akin to huckleberry and blueberry are joined by juicy raspberry acidity, a nice grip of tannin and a rewarding finish of sweet spices with Western serviceberry.
